The Low Down on Leadership
Top UK leadership consultant Steve Radcliffe, offered North East businesses the opportunity to improve the quality of their leadership through a series of workshops during a recent visit to the region. The straight speaking Lancashire man helped leaders from a whole range of organisations to develop their leadership, which would enable them to deliver better results at work and in life.
Steve, a former resident of Newcastle, led four separate leadership events, hosted by local organisations - The Institute of Directors Newcastle and Teesside, The Entrepreneurs’ Forum, and Newcastle Science City.
Steve addressed leadership in a no non-sense manner; with the belief that leading is a natural human activity - leadership shouldn’t be complicated. His passion stems from seeing just what an enormous difference good leadership can make to the lives of people and the performance of organisations.
Steve’s unique and proven approach of Future-Engage-Deliver proved to be well received. The three simple principles have been drawn from Steve’s wealth of experience which includes watching leaders for 20 years and reading more than 200 books on leadership. He explained this process as, “you have to be good at imagining the future,” engage- “you need other people to want to build the future with you,” and deliver - “you’ve got to make stuff happen.”
Steve also addressed building awareness about energies in organisations, as he believes the central aspect of leading is to “keep your spirit energy alive.”
Discussing this Philippa Clothier, a personal friend of Steve, who arranged his visit to the North East, said, “I believe that spiritual energy is crucial leadership energy because it brings hope and optimism to people, and so has them feel more ready and confident to build the future.”
Steve encouraged leaders present to be “up to something”. Which according to Steve is, the need to have an ambition, dream or goal for your team, organisation, colleagues or yourself-and it’s got to matter to you.
Steve’s own personal “up to something plan” involves stimulating a national discussion about leadership and making Future Engage Deliver an everyday strategy to be used by everyone – from the school dinner lady right up to chief executive, as each of us is capable of being a great leader.
Lisa Kelly, CLC intern was given the opportunity to attend all four events and said: “The workshops inspired those that attended to reach their potential as leaders - they engaged people’s spirit and delivered memorable results. Steve made everyone aware of being more conscious of what’s going on around them, and crucially, become more aware of who we are in every moment.”
